food goals

Out of all the goals I have set for the new year this week, the
food goals are probably the simplest, but also most difficult!  Food is such a funny thing; a very personal
choice for so many people.  Everyone
seems to know the “best” way that you should eat.  However, I think everyone is different,
therefore some people do better with a different set of food rules than someone else would.
My main goal for food this year is to eat clean.  What does that mean exactly?  Well, it is mainly to stay away from the
Standard American Diet (SAD).  I want to
stay away from processed foods.  I want
to make sure that I am making food from scratch.  I actually love to do this, but the problem I
find is the time requirement involved.
I would like to start baking more than one loaf of bread at
a time.  It seems I make one loaf and it
is gone approximately 20 minutes after I take it out of the oven.  We are only a family of 4…two of whom are
tiny little people with enormous appetites for freshly baked bread.  I made bagels yesterday for the second time
in my life, and don’t know why it isn’t a part of my weekly routine.
Really, I want to get back to the basics of food.  Like Michael Pollan says ask yourself if your grandmother or great-grandmother would recognize
it as food, if not, don’t eat it.
It is the dead of winter right now, so while thinking about
my food goals, I am also thinking about my garden goals.  I want to produce as much of the food we eat
as possible.  It is something that I take
pride in, even if it is only a frittata with eggs from the chickens and veggies
from our garden.
Overall, I think clean eating is where it is at this
year.  I have made so many changes to my
family’s diet over the past several years, that now the main goal is to stick
with it.  It isn’t easy to not eat
processed food.  It isn’t easy to make
all your snacks.  But, it is definitely
rewarding (and usually tastes better!).

Do you have any
specific food goals this year?  Have you
tried a more local and seasonal diet?

  1. Your bagels look delicious! I try to make as much food as well from scratch. However, sometimes – because of time – I rely on prepackaged food. Not ideal…perhaps something I can work towards in the future.

    1. The time commitment is insane for cooking from scratch. There are a lot of weeks when I have my husband pick up take out on the way home because I just didn't get stuff made. I am working on more batch cooking to make it easier. For example, cooking a large pot of beans early in the week so that we can have them all week long. And the bagels were quite good, but unfortunately made only 8 and they are gone…that didn't take long 😉

  2. I'm trying to get back to cooking from scratch and eating more veggies. I've been juicing for breakfast. I try to buy as much organic produce as possible. My problem is meat. I can't afford the quality of meat I would like and so don't eat as much of it. I want to use more of other sources of protein.

    1. Absolutely LOVE juicing…unfortunately quite expensive. Sometimes I wish that I was the only one in our house that enjoys it…making juice for four people, even if two are littles, gets a little pricey! I definitely hear you on the price of good quality meat as well. We eat A LOT of beans in our house. My kids especially like black beans and refried beans, so we have that a lot. We also eat a lot of nuts and seeds, and quinoa which is a great source of protein as well.

  3. I try hard to eat clean whenever possible and make meals, snacks, etc from scratch. When I do a shortcut I look for items with short ingredient lists and that I can pronounce. Luckily there is more availability these days / yes More costly but an option. In the end the "from scratch" method seems most cost effective and healthy.

    1. You are such an encouragement to me, making your girlies snacks every week…if only I could get to that place. I go through long periods of time just buying the snacks…but I am working on it 🙂
