Yesterday's Vlog

I always feel like I have a good handle on clutter.  I regularly clean up my space, and often go through every room in our home in order to get rid of the unnecessary.  Yet, without fail, it seems like I always have surface de-cluttering to do.

Now, I am going to be the first to admit that I have a lot of paper.  For a long time I fought against paper.  I tried to make sure that everything was digital.  I culled cookbooks, and got rid of paper planners, in order to create a digital wonderland.

The problem with that digital wonderland?  I didn’t use it.  Now that I think about it, it is similar to my issue with digital pictures.  I have a ton of digital pictures – consistently dump them onto an external hard drive – but then never look at them again.  I will one day I’m sure…maybe.

But back to the digital wonderland – I couldn’t keep track of my schedule.

I realized that I am a paper and pen kind of gal.  Once I accepted that, I may have gone over the deep end with my love of Erin Condren products, but surprisingly, they have helped me to keep track of life, of my blog, of when the kids have doctor, dentist, fill-in-the-blank appointments.

But, because of my not-so-new found love of paper, my surface spaces tend to get mucked up, and quickly.

Here is where I will blame this on every other member of my family but myself!

You see, whenever I take the time to clean off my work table, or the section of counter in my kitchen where I also work (I currently have a climbing toddler who enjoys sitting on top of my desk), it inevitably gets covered with a few hours by “other stuff.”  My kids and husband know that these are my workspaces, but it seems as though when they see a cleared off space, that makes the perfect spot to store a LEGO person that Lucy may eat, or an old cracker, or several books, or, or, or.  And what happens?  My cleared work space becomes many different piles of “stuff.”

Is that true in your house?  If there is a cleared off space, does it automatically get dumped on by every person in the family?

What is a mama to do?  Well, the pictures today are of what it looks like currently.  Not completely cleared off, but definitely orderly (at least so that I can find what I need – and yes I realize that is a diaper on my counter, at least it is a clean diaper!).  But, to my lovely family members it is not a cleared off surface, and so they don’t seem to set stuff there.  I’m not sure how long it will last.  Honestly I don’t have high hopes at all, but I am pleased with the fact that it is somewhat orderly after four days of looking like this!

How do you keep your surfaces clear from clutter?  Does your family like to put things down on a clear spot as soon as you have cleaned it up, like my family?

  1. I heard about the Erin Condren launch sometime last week and, of course, first thing that came to mind was "man, that'd be nice, right?!" followed immediately by a "no, no it wouldn't, you wouldn't use it the whole year" and I had to agree with myself. xD But they are so beautiful! And I'd use it, like, half the year, so that counts, right?! xD

My desk gets messy enough as it is without any help from anyone, I'm not sure it could take having any help in that department from anyone else! But even with just me, I clear it off, it's great for a day or so, and then all of a sudden the pens escaped their pouch, I've got colored pencils strewn about the place, and there's nowhere to keep my notebooks close at hand any more. Oh, the struggle.

  2. I have those spaces that breed, too. The island in my kitchen is the main one. I don't even know how half the stuff gets there.

  3. I'm definitely a pen and paper girl! I have to write it down to remember. I carry my EC planner everywhere!

  4. I know the feeling I do a mixture of digital and paper based paperwork but ultimately its a simple notebook that helps organize my life!

  5. I also have spaces the breed. The one that breeds the most is the kitchen desk.

  6. Our house is always picked up. It just always has been so it's a habit for all four of us. The boys have always been responsible for picking up their 'stuff' and putting it away. Sure they STILL have to be reminded a decade into their lives, but they do it right away because that's just how it is here. One rule I have is a paper or mail is only touched once. If it is a note from school it is read, signed if needed, and returned into the folder or placed on the fridge or tossed. Most of it is tossed!

  8. We have this very same problem; I clear off a space and before I can turn around something has been placed there. And, I have the same issues that you do with "going digital" - every appointment, etc, goes on my google calendar, but I also keep a paper planner because it makes it more real.

  9. I think this is a problem almost in everyone's house. My kitchen counter is just as bad, whenever I clean, the kids dump their stuff there. Wish they would do better but they don't.

  10. We have clutter everywhere so I try to stay on top of it and never let it get too out of control. I don't usually have a plan of attack, I just try to deal with the madness which **sometimes** works!

  11. I have a rule in my house. If you leave it lying around, it's obviously not that important and it gets thrown in the trash.

  13. I am very, very bad at fighting clutter. And this drives me crazy. I know I need to declutter and get rid of stuff -- not just put it in new piles! My kids are out of the house so I have no one to blame but myself!

  14. I use digital sometimes, while but the other time I use paper. I have clear space in my home for me, and it stays clean until..well... I mess it up..LOL.

  15. We are in the process of decluttering alot of stuff. We have a few junk drawers that need to be cleaned out.

  16. My worst problem with surface decluttering is that I have things I'm not sure I know what to do with but don't want to get rid of. They don't really fit in a certain category do it's hard to figure out.

  18. We're pretty good with no clutter but lately our table in the kitchen is breeding. It makes me crazy.

  19. I find that I feel more settled when my space us uncluttered. So I try to un-clutter as often as I can

  20. Oh, how I can relate! We are so bad about having random clutter piles around the house and we're actually in the midst of a de-clutter/yard sale prep right now. The worst offender is the end table between our two couches. If we get a sectional, problem solved, LOL! No more table!

  21. I can leave my desk so neat and in the night the clutter fairies (AKA my children) will come and do things to it! This will help us this summer.

  22. Oh goodness--my counter is too much like this and it drives me BATTY. Unfortunately it's mostly stuff that doesn't have a home and so it just sits until I usually toss it (kids artwork, paperwork, bills). I just added "15 minute tidy" to my monthly to do list. We'll see if it actually helps!! Good luck to you. ;)

  23. Lately I have been getting better at decluttering! I find it hard to get anything done when I'm surrounded by so much stuff. It's amazing how messy my workspace can get in a day though.
