What Would You Give Up?

I think back to my own childhood of sitting on my corded land line phone with my best friend, while we watched TV (General Hospital if you are wondering!).  Now, instead of sitting on a land line all afternoon, my kids are able to communicate through facetime with their friends and family, and it is like being right there with them, which is especially nice since our family does not live close by.  So having the opportunity to use this technology is definitely a benefit for us!

Did you know that 60% of smartphone owners say they couldn’t make it longer than a few hours without checking their smart phone?

In fact, there was an entertaining survey done recently about “what would you give up?”

Some surprising things that people would give up before giving up their smart phone:

Chocolate (72%) – This one definitely surprised me!  Americans (and women) love their chocolate.  But, more than 7 out of 10 people would rather give up chocolate than their smart phone!

TV (65%) – This one is not as surprising to me, I often will watch shows on my iPhone, especially at night when I should be trying to sleep!  There are so many ways to stream shows and movies these days, getting rid of the TV seems easy enough.

Caffeine (63%) – I’m not sure that I could give up caffeine…or my iPhone.  I have given up caffeine over the years several times, most notably when I was pregnant, however, after a few months of sleepless nights, I always seem to be back on the caffeine bandwagon.

Pets (50%) – I laughed a little when I read this one!  We don’t have any pets right now, but I can’t just picture someone looking at their cute little puppy and saying “sorry Fido, I just need to keep my cell phone.”  Maybe these people are cat owners?

And for the final ridiculous one:

Food (33%) – A full one-third of respondents would rather go hungry than give up their smart phone.  I’m pretty sure that if given the choice I would still choose food…but maybe that is just me!

{31 Days} Expectation vs. Reality

Have you seen the memes out there about expectation vs. reality?  You go to a restaurant and order one thing, but then you get served a meal that is looking far less appealing than the picture on the menu.  It always makes me laugh when I see those types of pictures out on the internet.

It got me thinking though, how often am I trying to have my expectation play out exactly, but it is not realistic?


When I started this {31 Days} series, I expected that I would finish it.  Oh, yes, of course I am writing about being overwhelmed, and the fact that I did not prepare posts ahead of time to complete this series; it would all be a day by day written journal, very old school blogger style.

Yet, here we are on Day 24 and I haven’t posted since Day 12…

I think that often as bloggers we get into the habit of giving advice, but forget to give the story behind that advice.  While I would love to share with you ways that you can successfully overcome overwhelming feelings, that isn’t necessarily what you will get from me.  Instead I am trying to share with you what I am going through, and perhaps you can find some encouragement in the fact that I do not have it all figured out.


While it would be easy to throw in the towel at this point, and in fact it may seem to some that I have, I decided that this is such an important topic that I want to keep trying.

Why is it that our expectations can differ so much from reality?  What are we using as a measure?

Dark Before Dawn by Monica McGurk - Book Review

Thank you Monica McGurk for reaching out to me to review the third installment of your Archangel Prophecies book series!  This is a sponsored post, all opinions are my own.

Dark Before Dawn is the third book in the Archangel Prophecies series by Monica McGurk.  Because of that, I am giving you fair warning that you will definitely want to read the first two installments before you start this book.


I have been anxiously awaiting this books’ release.  I love series, but I am not so good at waiting for the next installment to be released (I started reading Harry Potter before book 5 was released…that was some difficult waiting!).  If you would like to read my reviews of the first two books, you can find them here –

                                 
Dark Before Dawn starts off with a scene reminiscent of the fairies blessing Sleeping Beauty as a baby, and the old fairy coming in afterwards and giving her a curse.

We are met with Michael, the Archangel, as well as Gabrielle, Arthur, and Raph; where they all bestow blessings on a new baby, somewhat reluctantly by everyone but Michael who ordered them to be there.  Lurking in the corner was Lucas, who ended up adding his own “special” blessing in a curse.

Then we fast forward several years into the future.

I actually appreciated this part of the story.  I wasn’t sure how the entire relationship would play out between a teenager and an Archangel, so creating a bit more balance that way was a good move in my mind.  Although, with the ending of book two, I think this could have been a good book as to what Hope went through to this point to make her into the person she is today.

Hope is now a much more confident, strong person, although she is constantly worrying about the decision she needs to make – how will she move forward, with or without Michael?

This book is quite a bit different than the first two books in the series as it concentrates heavily on child trafficking.  This was featured in the previous two books, but it was much more a background story than it was in this third installment.  You can feel the passion that the author has for this incredibly important cause, and bringing it to the main stream.


I think it was incredible to see the imagery of what is happening in this country currently, something that I did not really consider before.

The ending is not at all what I expected, but it was a wonderful way to end the series. 

It was a very fast paced book, which made it a quick read.  Overall, I think this is a wonderful series for young adults, and one that I would definitely recommend to people who enjoy fantasy novels.  I would recommend that if you would like your teen or tween to read this series that you make sure you read with them, it will definitely bring up some amazing questions and talking points about the real world beyond the doorstep of most kids today.

{31 Days} Balancing Kids Activities with the Need for Family Time

This is a really hard topic for me to talk about.  I have major opinions on both sides of this, and they don’t seem to meet anywhere close to the middle.  I think that kids’ activities are incredibly important, but I also think that there are other ways to get kids involved in life without participating in sports or extracurricular activities.


On the one hand, I love that my kids love sports.  I did not like sports growing up, and gravitated towards all things music instead.  But, I didn’t actually get fully involved with music outside of school until high school (if you don’t count piano lessons).

Both of my kids really enjoy sports, and my husband was into sports when he was in school as well, so we wanted to give them the opportunity to be involved.  Of course, I knew that the time commitment would be considerable as soon as Jack and Emma were both in sports, but I persevered!


This year will be the first year that we will have competing schedules between my older two kids and their sports, and I am not looking forward to it.  I am still holding out hope that one of the kids decides not to participate in basketball so that the schedule isn’t quite as hectic. 

That is the other side of the coin for me.

I don’t like the idea of my family being scattered for a few months out of the year, racing from one practice to the next, and not really having the ability to all sit down together as a family more than one or two nights a week.

How do you balance that?

How do you allow your kids to become involved in the activities they want without giving up that family time? 

Balancing Kids Activities with the Need for Family Time

Honestly, I do not know.  It is something that we are working on though.  Is there a way that we can have the kids involved and still be able to carve out enough family time?  Or do we continue on this path and understand that for specific seasons we will not be together very often.

Considering my kids are all 8 and under at this moment, it seems a little silly to think about it in such a way, but surprisingly this is the way it works.  I’m not sure I want to give up all of these years in order to run around to different activities for one child.

I have been digging into the archives over at FIMBY and found this post I read a long while ago about choosing a family activity overteam sports.  That has really resonated with me recently.

It is something that I am definitely willing to do, although with Lucy being not even two yet, it becomes a little difficult to find an activity we can all participate in together.  I also know that my husband really values the team sports aspect.

I’m not sure this post will help anyone with overcoming overwhelm this month, but it is something that I tend to war with myself about frequently.  Especially because our busy season of basketball starts relatively soon.  That is when everything gets a lot more complicated, and very much overwhelming.

{31 Days} On Being an Introvert

As we moved into our new school year (at the beginning of August), I thought about being an introvert, and the unique challenges I face as an introvert who is always around people.  And not just that I am around people, but that I have people attached to me every.single.day. 


I don’t want you to get the wrong idea here, I love being a mom, and I love homeschooling, and I love watching my kids flourish in activities, but it does wear on me big time.

I want to clear up a couple misconceptions about introverts.  Number one, we are not all extremely shy.  In fact, in groups of people I am quite outgoing.  I don’t have trouble speaking to others, and I generally love life.  What an introvert really is, is someone who needs solitude in order to energize.  So while I love being out with people, I need some serious quiet and alone time in order to recharge. 

I haven’t been getting that recently.

I think that is the root for feeling constantly overwhelmed.  So while I am writing about all the different steps I am taking to try and combat this feeling, I know that it is only a season, and eventually life with settle down a bit more, and I can find my way back to a bit more balance internally.

I am also a control person.  I need to control certain aspects of my life, such as my quiet time, and when I can’t, I often start to feel overwhelmed.

I think that this is human nature though – trying to be in control of everything around you.  I know, as a Christian, that I am really not in control of my life, and I really should be celebrating that, knowing that someone is watching out for me and knows what is going to happen next.  Instead, I often fight against this, and try to make things work the way that *I* think they should work.  This, most likely, leads to even more overwhelming feelings!

The need for control is something that I am working on changing, although I’m not sure how much I can change that.  When I start feeling overwhelmed, I cling to what I can do to change the situation, or to change my attitude in the situation.

On Being an Introvert and what an Introvert is Not

When I become overwhelmed, I can easily feel defeated, which was evident by my brain dump post yesterday.  I will often feel like no matter what I do, things are not going to work out how I want, and it is just a downward spiral from there.

Having the ability to change my thinking in this situation is so so important!

If I don’t make the choice to change my thinking, I will get carried off by circumstances and end up in the corner crying.

Of course, that is exactly what I have been doing the past couple of months.  When our schedule gets busy, and I don’t have as much control over the when and the where, it becomes something that I fight against, instead of working with. 

Having some strategies to make sure that I am still able to function is obviously important.

My main strategy for a long time was to make sure that I had my morning routine down.  Of course, when I wrote about morning routines earlier this month I explained that they were most definitely not working right now.

I really crave that solitude, so instead of having it first thing in the morning, I have started to enforce a “rest time” in the afternoon.  I would love to say this gives me a nice long uninterrupted break where I can recharge, but that isn’t really the case.  Most of the time I get about 30 minutes between getting Lucy down for a nap and then helping Emma and Jack get settled so I can go downstairs.

Now, I used to use rest time as a work time.  Some time to get things done around the house.  I still do that on occasion, but I realized that I really need that time for myself, so instead I am sitting and reading a book.  I find that it gives me just enough solitude to help out with the rest of the day.

No day is ever perfect, but it is what is working right now.  I hope that as time goes on, the kids are able to spend a little more time in their rooms, and perhaps Lucy will take a longer nap.  For now, thirty minutes of quiet in the afternoon is a wonderful respite for me.

{31 Days} When You Just Need a Break!

I want to preface the following post by apologizing on not being here the full 31 days - since I didn't post Friday or Saturday this week!

An interesting thing happened this week - I hit a wall.  While I had posts written for the past couple of days, I didn't publish them for whatever reason.  They may come up later in the series, they may not ever see the light of day.


Writing about being overwhelmed is pretty easy for me - especially when I am currently in that life stage right now.  I think that the problem is when I am trying to give solutions, when there may not be solutions right now for me.

One that I have been concentrating on is changing my thinking, but that is so incredibly difficult to do.


Why is it so difficult?

I have been asking myself this a lot lately - why is is so difficult to change.  I think that part of the reason is that I like to control things so much, and when I am not in control of situations, I obviously feel out of control and that leads to more feelings of being overwhelmed.

Recently I have been thinking about our busy schedule coming up through the holiday season, and it has stressed me out before it has even started.  That is never a good thing.  

What are some ways I can change this?

My husband and I were having a discussion on Saturday about ways that I could overcome some of these overwhelmed feelings, especially when our two older kids will be involved in sports through the winter.  I'm not sure we came to any real strategies to change my thinking, but it did push me to want to read some parenting books again.

I think that part of the overwhelm comes from my feelings of "am I doing enough"

Are the kids in enough activities?  Are they happy?  Are they thriving?

As a parent I tend to prioritize my kids over myself.  I think that is true of most parents, but it is in those stressful, very busy times, that I remember what I wrote about self-care last year, and how important it is to remember that if I do not take care of myself, how am I going to take care of anyone else.


Clearly this post is not a prescriptive post, but I do find that when I am overwhelmed, writing is something that helps.

When I started blogging, everything was a free write for me.  Every thought I had seemed to make it down on paper, or in my case the blog.  And when I started Townsend House way back when, it continued in a similar fashion.

I would love to say that I have all the answers, but I most certainly do not.  And that is what I am trying to convey back to you today.  

I needed a break, and I took a break, and it was good to take a step back and re-center myself.

Hopefully going forward, I can keep self-care in my mind, and understand that there are some unique boxes I need to check as an introvert, and remember to check those off my list!

{31 Days} Lists as a Tool not a Barrier

I talked a bit yesterday about making lists, and I realized I could easily write an entire post on my love of list making.  I don’t remember why I started making lists so many years ago, but I did, and I am thankful for that practice now.

Lists can be used for good and for bad.  You wouldn’t think that of something as simple as a list, but it is the truth, and I will explain it to you today.


You see, for me, lists have always been a way for me to get information out of my head.  I constantly have ideas and tasks running through my head, as I’m sure most of you do, but I dwell on them, and ruminate over them constantly until I write them down.  Then, once I have written them down, I am able to move on.  Not always, but for the most part.  This can be a good thing, for example at night when I am trying to go to sleep.  But, it can also be a bad thing, because I will often write things down and then promptly forget about them…or even worse lose my list!

I said yesterday that I am much more ambitious when I write my to-do lists first thing in the morning.

This is where lists can be a bad thing.  If I am over-ambitious with my lists, I can easily feel defeated at the end of the day when I inevitably do not finish the list.  When I look at my list at the end of the day I want to be encouraged, not discouraged. 

Whereas when I write my list the night before, it is easy to make the list short because I am at the end of the day and I know what I accomplished.

Here is the kicker, I am able to add things to the list throughout the day, not in an “oh crap, I forgot I need to do this” kind of way, but in an “oh, I have more time” kind of way.

The lists end up being an encouragement and a planning tool, allowing me to see what I am able to accomplish in a day, and not defeating me instead.

I am also not beyond adding tasks that I have already completed, so I have an accurate reflection of my day at the end of the day.

Often, when I am overwhelmed, I feel like I am accomplishing nothing during the day, discounting homeschooling the kids, making meals and snacks for everyone, and getting the laundry done.  If it is a particularly rough season, and this is all I get done in a day, I should be happy, instead of discouraged. 

I think a change of thinking is in order!  In overwhelming times, it definitely makes sense to celebrate the small things.

{31 Days} Three Tips for an Evening Routine that Works

I have heard it said before that a great evening routine ensures a productive morning.  And I will admit that I am not very good about an evening routine.  My main goal is to get my kids in bed before 9pm, and we usually do get them in bed by 9pm.  But, three kids that really go to bed at different times, that makes doing anything else in the evening complicated.

However, this month is not about excuses, it is about overcoming overwhelm, and one way that I think I can do that is to revamp our evening routine.



I would love to be able to tell you that I have it all figured out with my kids and evening routines, but that is not accurate.  So I am going to focus on some other little things that I can do in the evening to make my mornings go as smooth as possible.

First step – Make the coffee.  

I know this seems like such a silly thing.  It doesn’t take any time at all, but I often won’t set the coffee the night before, and inevitably I am irritated the next morning that the coffee fairies didn’t pick up my slack.  I don’t even necessarily need to have the coffee brewed in the morning, (sometimes my lofty expectations of waking at 4:30am are not met and the coffee shuts off before I get up), as long as it is in the coffee pot ready for me to press start.

For all of you non-coffee drinkers, you can obviously ignore this part.  But, perhaps you could share with me your secrets of not drinking coffee in the morning?

Let’s stop here, shall we.  If I do nothing else in the evening but this one little thing, my mood is improved in the morning.  Remember yesterday when I said that I wasn’t always a morning person?  Even now while I can easily wake up super early, I prefer not to be spoken to…or engaged…at all.  I still need to wake up!  If the coffee is made, I don’t grumble to myself and start off on the wrong foot.  It really is the little things.


Now for a few other items that make life a little bit easier.

Look at the calendar before I go to bed. 

I am pretty good at remembering appointments and commitments that we have, and I use my *planner constantly.  But, it is good to look at our family calendar to make sure I am prepared for the next day, if I have a meeting that I need to be at in the evening and need to make sure Matt is around so I don’t need to bring the kids out with me, or if Matt is going to be late from work for some reason.  As the season goes on we will add more sports to our calendar, and that gets busy as well.

I also like to take this time to jot down a couple of items that I know I need to complete the next day.

I will talk more about how I plan later this month, but I will give you a hint, it involves a lot of lists.

Lists are a funny thing, in the morning, they are a completely blank slate, and I, being extremely optimistic in my abilities during the day, tend to make them very very long first thing in the morning.  “How can I not accomplish all of these tasks?!” I exclaim to myself.  How indeed?

I have found that making my to-do list the night before adds a bit more clarity to the situation.  Especially if the day has been challenging, and I would say most are challenging.  Instead of putting down “clean all floors,” I am more likely to write “sweep and mop kitchen.”  Much more manageable.  And, if I am able to do more than that one floor, I will add it to my list the next day.

It is much easier to add tasks and appointments than it is to take them away.

Three Tips for an Evening Routine that Works

If I can accomplish these three items before I go to bed, I will be in a much better place first thing in the morning.  I am less likely to be thinking about what needs to be done the next day (causing me to be up half the night), and instead have already written it down so there is no need to dwell on it. 

Now, of course there are many other items that can be done in the evening to make your mornings easier, but seeing as how I am trying to overcome overwhelm this month, I realize that the fewer things on my to-do list, the better. 

Some other options are to set out your Bible, or other reading material and a journal if you prioritize quiet time in the morning.  If you want to exercise, make sure you set out your work-out clothes, socks and shoes so you are ready to get a jump on it as soon as you wake up.  Set your planner out, if you use a paper planner, and any other materials you may be using first thing in the morning.  If you are a homeschool mom, set the books out the night before, so you aren’t searching for them in the morning.  If you are a mom with kids who school outside of the home, make sure their backpacks are ready to go and pack lunches the night before so you have one less step in the morning.

These are some additional ideas to help your evening routine create a better morning for you!

{31 Days} When there is no Chance of a Good Morning Routine

I have talked a lot about morning routines here at Townsend House.  I wasn’t always a morning person, but several years ago, after drowning under so much stress from being a mom of a two year old and a newborn baby while healing from a cesarean, I met my limit.  I needed a change, and a morning routine was what it was.


I would love to say that it is so easy to make the change to have a morning routine; that is not the case.  It is a struggle.  And, even if you start out with a stellar morning routine, that doesn’t mean it won’t be interrupted at some point.

That is the point I am at currently.  My morning routine is no longer working.  And to me that is a complete nightmare.  I worked so hard to get to a point where I could have a great morning routine.  A routine that I knew well, I would have plenty of time for all of my MIT (most important tasks), and even drink a cup of hot coffee – always a bonus in my world.

What is really happening?

I have no morning routine at all right now.  Instead I have an almost two year old who has been getting one new tooth every two weeks for the past 5 months…incredibly slowly.  And that means that on average I am up about 5 times a night…every night. 


To say I am sleep deprived is probably an understatement.

Gone are my early morning planning sessions and time to get ready for the day before my kids up, and welcome back times of waking up TO my children instead of FOR my children.

When I wake up to my children, I am already overwhelmed in the day.  And that is never a good way for me to start.  I set the mood in our home, and when I am overwhelmed and stressed, the rest of the house is overwhelmed and stressed.

What can I do instead?

Since I can’t seem to sneak out of bed without my children waking up and immediately needing me (mostly Lucy), I need to have other strategies for my morning.

I am almost always awake before everyone else, whether or not I can get out of bed.  That doesn’t mean that I can’t try to accomplish SOME things on my morning to-do list.

Of course I am not drinking coffee in bed, although if the Jetsons want to hook me up with some sort of opening in my wall where I need only press a button and out comes the coffee that would be wonderful.


My morning time has always been Bible reading, journaling, coffee, planning for my day. 

Thankfully I can still read my Bible in bed.  Or some other book of my choosing.  I enjoy encouraging words in the morning, something to set my mind on the right path, and to help me remember to keep a level head (did I mention I haven’t always been a morning person?).  When I don’t get enough sleep, I tend to be a bear, and that isn’t any way to start the day.

It is honestly about the little changes that you can make in order to make life run more smoothly.

I read somewhere that it takes 21 days to create a habit, and that once you have that habit, it frees up brain space for another task, because it has become engrained in you.



What I have done is try to look at the items that I need to accomplish (and would like to do before my children wake up) and have a back-up plan for when I can’t get out of bed before them. 

I have noticed while doing these things, that has helped me quite a bit as well.

Also, I have to allow myself grace.  I just happen to be in a season of restless babes that need me.  That isn’t a bad thing, and I need to make sure that I don’t think of it as a bad thing.  I love my children, and I don’t want them to feel like they have done something wrong by needing me first thing in the morning.  I want to be the light they see in the world, and adjusting my own expectations is part of that journey.

When can I have a Morning Time?

While I may not be waking up earlier than my children every day of the week, I do aim to do it at least a couple times each week.  Those tend to be weekend days when I know that Matt will be home to help the kids if they wake up super early.

On those early mornings, I try to get as much stuff done for the entire week as I can.  Since I know that I will not have regular time in the morning daily, I tend to group things like my writing.  While I still write every day, it may not be as long or as in depth as I would like.  Instead I will take time to write out a bunch of topics that I want to write about, so that when I have the time to write, I can pick what speaks most to me.
