Margin and Self-Care are two terms that have been at the forefront of my mind for months now.  In fact, margin has become so important that it became my word of the year.  Since the start of this year I have been *trying* to practice margin and self-care.  It is definitely a struggle.

Putting margin into practice requires me to slow down.  Slowing down in the world today seems to take a lot more work than it used to.

There is always something that is requiring my attention, and they aren’t all bad things.  In fact, there are so many good activities vying for my attention (and the attention of my family) that it becomes extremely difficult to decide which items should be a priority and which can be put off or eliminated completely.

At the beginning of the year when I decided on margin as my word of the year, I knew that I was going to need to make some choices in order to structure my days differently.

As a mom and wife, and blogger, it seems like I can easily fill up my time with no end in sight, but I needed to practice that margin, and if I had to guess, you do as well.

Drinking a hot mug of tea is one of those rituals that I have loved for so very long.  My love of tea comes from my mom, and watching her always pull out a tea bag from her purse whenever we went to a friend’s house.  While I played, my mom would sit and drink tea with her friends.  It left an impression on me.

Now, as a mom as well, I see myself turning to the ritual of an afternoon cup of tea to help me slow down, and re-center my day.

Benefits is a new line of tea from Bigelow Teas which is designed to support everyday wellness – perfect for what I am trying to accomplish.  Having a tea that will help fuel my body with good-for-me ingredients is a no-brainer.  Finding something that can calm the stress of a morning of homeschool lessons while trying to also deal with a crazy toddler – definitely necessary!

We have incorporated a tea time into our day that has benefited all of us.

While my youngest is napping, my older two will sit and have tea with me.  We have a selection of poetry books, as well as longer chapter books that we like to read together, and taking this time in the afternoon to sit, read, and re-connect with one another has been important to our overall well-being.

My favorite blend in this new line is the Sleep Chamomile and Lavender Herbal TeaThis blend is especially great for my kids who need a little down time in the afternoon as well.  We are constantly going going going in the morning, so when we can sit down together and relax a bit, having this special tea and poetry time, brings us back together and centered.

After our tea time, the kids then go up for their own rest time, where they play games, play Minecraft, and read on their own.

This is the point where I sit down for myself, drink my tea, and read a book for my own benefit.

It hasn’t been easy to incorporate that time into my day.  It seems like there is always something else vying for my attention, and I have to make the choice to slow down and take a step back from all of my tasks.

I have to make it a priority.

Even though there is always something else to do, taking that brief time to sit and breathe has been important to my day.

I love the Balance – Cinnamon Blackberry Herbal Tea to help encourage me in this endeavor.  The name of the tea reminds me that balance is what I am seeking.

I believe that these teas can help define the way you want to live, and I know that Bigelow agrees with me on this one!

The teas are designed to support a clean eating and healthy lifestyle.  I love that they are non-GMO and also blended and produced in the USA.

Finding small ways to encourage balance in your life is something that I have been striving for now for a while, and having an everyday tea that helps me in that endeavor is something that I love.

I have found that making this a daily routine has been a huge help in helping me find that balance and margin that I need in my life.  It is now something that I don’t need to think about – just like eating lunch, you only need a short amount of time to be able to sit down and breathe.  Pick up a book for some pleasure reading, or read a bit of poetry with your kids.  Use the time to re-connect with your kids, your spouse, a friend, or yourself.

The line consists of six herbal teas, and one green tea.  It can easily be found at your local Shaw’s store, or my favorite place to shop – amazon.com

  13. Balance is really important in life. Too much or too little of something will drive anyone crazy. I think Tea promotes balance and I prefer it over coffee.

  20. I love this, and that idea of balance is SO hard! My mom has always been a big tea drinker, and while I'm not, I do love to have an afternoon cup of coffee (something my grandmother taught me by example) during my daughter's quiet time. It's soothing and, despite the caffeine, relaxes me and let me think through my to-do list or, sometimes, clear my mind and not think about anything at all. As mamas, we all need that little bit of relaxation!
