{31 Days} Preparing for Baby # 3 – Homeschooling with a Newborn

Welcome to my {31 Days} series this year!  We will soon be welcoming baby # 3 and I realized that there is a lot I need to do before that happens!  You can find all the posts in this series here.  Thank you for following along with me.

I have been spending a lot of time thinking about
homeschooling over the past six months.
I had a wonderful mother’s helper, who essentially
allowed me to plan out the kids’ entire school year this summer.  It was amazing feeling so prepared!
When I realized that I would be having a baby in the fall,
one of my biggest concerns was how that was going to work with
homeschooling.  My two are six and four,
so they are not doing a ton of independent work when it comes to school.  This is a whole new world for me.  When we brought home our second baby, Emma
was two, so although I knew we would be homeschooling, we were not doing
anything besides reading books and singing songs.
We are year ‘round homeschoolers, I believe that every day
the kids are able to learn something new even if they are not sitting down to
do some type of worksheet.  But, I also
knew that I was going to need to do quite a bit more in the late summer/early
fall so that I did not feel like we were completely behind.
So far it has been going wonderfully!  The kids are enjoying school, and
accomplishing most of what I want to accomplish on a weekly basis.

What happens when the baby comes?  Well, we will be taking time off from
school.  I think that is a definite bonus
of homeschooling, the flexibility.  We
will take off right through the holidays this year.  We typically will take off between
Thanksgiving and Christmas for our winter break, but this year we will start a
bit earlier, whenever baby decides to make her arrival!
This does not mean we will completely stop learning, like I
said above I believe the kids are able to learn something every day.  However, I can say with confidence it will be
pared down…a lot.  I expect that our
literature based approach to homeschooling will be a help.  The ability to sit down and nurse the baby
while reading to the kids will be a great way to keep the learning going, even
though we are officially on a “break.”
I would love to hear from more experienced homeschoolers,
but also from those of you who have kids in public school!

What did you do when
you brought a new baby home?  Did you
take a large break?  How was the
adjustment period in those first weeks?

  1. It's good to read that there is grace for schooling during the midst of bringing a new baby home. I have been working with my 4 year old in bits and had not even thought about how a new baby might change that for us. Love that your posts are really getting me thinking!!!

    1. Good advice! I keep thinking, well I might be able to give the kids some of this to do, or we could probably get that done, but it probably isn't that smart! I will definitely be taking my time working back into things 🙂

  2. Homeschooling with a new baby sounds totally ideal to me – that flexibility will make life so much easier (no waking baby to do school drop off!) It looks like you are very organised!

  3. You know, I love homeschool. I know a lot of people don't, but as a former teacher, I think it does so much good for kids. The individualized instruction, the freedom to be able to explore their interest, and the ability to move at their own pace.
