Last week we picked up our first Winter Pantry CSA share. I am so glad that we have this for the winter. We are definitely lucky to have found an organic farm that does a winter share, especially considering we live in Maine.
Every year I plant a garden, and I always have high hopes that I will be able to plant a lot of really great vegetables that we can eat through the summer. Unfortunately, I don’t ever seem to plant winter storage vegetables. Partly because we don’t have a huge amount of space to grow all of the squash and potatoes that we would want. The other reason is that we don’t actually have a way of storing these vegetables – besides our refrigerator.
I would love to have a root cellar. It is something that I keep joking with Matt about – that I will dig a hole outside and start sticking food out there. We do have a cellar in our home, but like a lot of older homes, it definitely is not a dry basement. In fact, every spring (and sometimes during the summer and fall), we have a little stream running through the basement. Not necessarily the best storage location! So until we find a suitable solution to our main issues, we will continue to support local farmers in order to get some delicious winter vegetables.
