Homeschool Traditions for a Great 1st Day!

I always loved the first day of school when I was growing up.  The allure of new school supplies, and seeing friends that I hadn’t seen all summer, were all so fun to me.  I would pick out my outfit put all of my supplies in my backpack, and be on my way.  There were lots of the first day of school traditions, but what about homeschool traditions?

Even though your kids aren’t going “back-to-school,” there is still some desire to have some homeschool traditions.  They could be very traditional, they could be wacky, they could be anything that you choose, really!  We have had several different homeschool traditions throughout the years.  This year was slightly different.  My older two were just finished with several days of pretty high fevers, and my youngest had just come down with the high fever the night before.  It wasn’t exactly the start of the year that I was expecting!

Make Homeschool Traditions Fun

Obviously, you want your traditions to be fun.  That can be anything from a funny first day of school picture to a trip to the beach because everyone else is back to school.  We tend to start school before the public school does, so we like to have 1st day of homeschool traditions, as well as 1st day of public school traditions.  As long as it isn’t adding stress to your life, and is instead encouraging you and your kids to start a great year ahead, it will be perfect.

For my family, this means new school supplies.

We love school supplies around here.  Something about new planners, new crayons and markers, new notebooks.  It all is wonderful.  And my kids have gotten my love for new supplies as you can see from the video above.  This year the kids and I also got new Write the Word Journals.  The Kids’ version of this journal is something I am really excited about for the year!  We all will be working on the Fruit of the Spirit together.

This year we also took some first day of school pictures.  Keeping a record of how they grow each year is fun to look back on.  Our pictures are not always polished – but they are memories, and important ones!  So even if your kids are in their pj’s all day take a picture.  It doesn’t have to be posed, in fact sometimes candid is better!

A little blurry, but an accurate depiction of our first day of school when the kids were very little!

Creating Memories

The aim of first day of homeschool traditions is to make memories for you and your family.  It shouldn’t be a lot of pressure, it shouldn’t be a struggle.  You already have so much going on that you don’t need to put more on top of your shoulders.  Let it be fun!

Our Homeschool Traditions

I do try to take a picture of the kids actual first day of homeschool.  Often I forget, or we are so busy trying to get back into a good rhythm and create consistency in our days.  This means that I normally start to think about pictures when I see all of my public school friend’s posting theirs.  This year, I was on the ball!  Partly because we started exactly one day before the public school started, and partly because it was a beautiful day outside to take pictures.

This year we also did our homeschool interviews.  These were created for public school kids, but I think they are just as relevant for homeschoolers.  It is fun to look back on these interviews and see what the kids had to say.

What are some of your favorite ways to commemorate a new homeschool year?  Do you have specific homeschool traditions?
