Using What We Love – 11th Grade Curriculum Picks
Well, it is finally time to share what we are using for 11th Grade for my son. Honestly, I didn’t know when I would even share this information. It has been such a weird summer trying to get ready for Emma to go to college, and I wasn’t quite ready to move into considering fall without her here. But, it is time now!

History & English
This year for History and English we will be going back to Sonlight and using Sonlight level 300 which is 20th Century World History. I absolutely loved this level Emma and I did it a few years ago, and I think it will be just as good the second time around. The books are so insightful for this level, and bring around so much discussion. Discussion is one of my favorite parts of homeschooling. There are so many interesting thoughts and opinions to debate and share. It really is one of the best parts about homeschooling, especially the high school years.
Math
For math this year, we are planning to stay with what works, and that is Teaching Textbooks Pre-Calculus. This is the last level that Teaching Textbooks has, and we are very much looking forward to finishing it out. Jack has always tested great in math, and so we aren’t going to try and change up what is already clearly working so well. I believe that after this year we will move to dual-enrollment for math at the college, but that is a next year’s problm!
One thing different this year will be that we also got the pre-calculus book. It will be helpful for him to easily flip back and forth in the book as he is working through the problems. They have a great free trial of 15 lessons in any level if you are looking for math curriculum for the coming year!
Science
Science was the hardest one for me to figure out this year. The past two years Jack has done Computer Science through Compuscholar. But, this year, he is doing Physics. Emma never did Physics so I had to do a deep dive on what might be the best option. We finally arrived at Derek Owens Physics. He has both regular and Honors versions, and I believe we will be doing the Honors version. They also have parent-graded and teacher-graded options. I think we will start out with the teacher-graded and see how that goes, and then move to parent-graded if he is doing well.
Derek Owens is a monthly subscription-based program, and was not one that I had heard of until this year. I think it will be a good year for science for Jack!
Electives
This year Jack will continue to work on his passion projects, which currently are a movie he is creating with his friend, continuing his digital music production, creating video games, and working on his streaming on YouTube. He has decided to not take Japanese anymore. He did 3 years, and we really enjoyed using all of the resources from Japanese from Zero! but he wants to spend time on other things, so we are dropping foreign language this year.
Overall I think it is going to be a great year! I was hoping to do a lot more offline work with him this year, and I think I will accomplish that between English and History as well as a lot of book work with pre-calculus. The past two years he has had a pretty heavy online course load. I am really thankful for the many amazing resources that are available online – I never would have been able to teach him how to create his own music for the movie he is making, online classes made those skills easier to learn. But, because so many of his passion projects are online-based, I wanted to move back towards a lot more book-focused learning.
